Beloved musical

Blood Brothers, Willy Russell's incredibly popular musical, wraps up its run at the Thousand Islands Playhouse July 31. The story focuses on twin brothers, separated at birth, who meet, become best friends, fall in love with the same girl and remain united until the secret of their birth is revealed, with tragic results.

Musical Spelling Bee

The Tony Award-winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee continues its run at the Rotunda Theatre until July 31. Presented by Collective Productions, the story focuses on six young people in the throes of puberty who learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't make you a loser during a competitive spelling bee. The musical stars Meredith Slack, April Johnson, Jake Deodato, Jacquie Byers, Shea Wood, Lukas Duchaine, Steven Suepaul and Chelsea Swain.

Show runs July 29-31 at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on the 31, at the Theological Hall on Queen's campus.

Tickets: $18/adult, $15/student/senior at the Kingston Visitor Information Centre, or at the door.

Coming of age story

The Thousand Islands Playhouse Firehall season continues with Master Harold and the Boys by Athol Fugard.

Set in South Africa during the early apartheid era, the story deals with the coming of age of 17-year-old Hally, a white South African. This touching story captures not only the havoc wreaked by the apartheid era but also the human relationships put to the test by societal and personal forces.

Written by Fugard and directed by Nigel Shawn Williams, this award-winning play runs until Saturday, August 21. Performances are Tuesday through Sunday, 8pm with matinees Fridays and Saturdays at 2:30pm. Tickets: $32/adult, $30/seniors, $25/under 30, $16/student/child. All Sunday tickets are $16. Theatre 5 comedy thriller

Theatre 5's first season at its new home, 57 Baiden Street, continues with Marriage is Murder by Nick Hall, a comedy-thriller about Paul and Polly Butler, two mystery writers who conjure up characters who kill.

Directed by Valerie Robertson, the show features actors Jennifer Varadi and Mackenzie Ball in shows running Thursday to Saturday, from August 5-21. Family musical

Up next at the Thousand Islands Playhouse is a musical inspired by Kenneth Grahame's story The Wind in the Willows. The classic tale has been updated, renewed and set it on the St. Lawrence River. Brimming with humour, music and hijinx, the fun begins on the docks of the Springer Theatre, where audiences are introduced to the characters, and then moves inside for the adventure of Toad and friends.

Directed by Kathryn MacKay and composed by David Archibald and John Corrigan, Up the River previews Thursday, Aug. 5 and opens Friday, Aug. 6 with a dockside fish fry ($20).

Murderously dark musical

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's chilling, heart-pounding tale tells the infamous story of the unjustly exiled barber Sweeney Todd, who returns to a forgotten London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe.

Show runs Thursday, Aug. 5 to Saturday, Aug.14 at the L'Octave Theatre (711 Dalton Ave.). Tickets: $18/adult, $15/students/seniors, $12 children 12 and under, with reduced prices for matinees. Details: www.kingstongrand.ca/events.

Art Show

The Lodge on Amherst Island presents new work by Wallace Edwards, featuring work from Edwards' newest collaboration with David Suzuki and Kathy Vanderlinden. Show opens Saturday, July 31 at 3pm and sales begin at 3:30pm.
